The Hong Kong Association of Gerontology (Association), a member of International Association of Gerontology since 1989, was founded in 1986 by a group of professionals including geriatricians, nurses, social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists and academics. It was established with the aim of promoting the discipline of gerontology and improving the quality of age care services in Hong Kong.
To further our commitment in training to improve standard of aged care services and quality of life of older people, in November 2000 the Association established the Hong Kong Institute of Gerontology, with the goals of provide training, conducting exchange programs and further developing gerontological research in Hong Kong. From June 2001, funding support for the setting up and running of the Hong Kong Institute of Gerontology has been obtained from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for setting up its venue in Lam Tin.
Upon initiation of the Hong Kong Association of Gerontology (HKAG) and the recommendation of the Social Welfare Department (SWD), the Lotteries Fund Advisory Committee has approved funding for HKAG to undertake a 2-year "Pilot Project on Accreditation System for Residential Care Services for the Elders in Hong Kong.
